This sentence firmly condemns Marcello Dell'Utri, Silvio Berlusconi's right hand during the creation Berlusconi's first party Forza Italia. But on the other side, the magistrates have neglected to go deeper into investigating the pact that may have been established between Dell'Utri and the mafia to help Forza Italia:
"As well as Mr Dell’Utri, this watershed clears Silvio Berlusconi and all the others who are alleged to have nurtured Forza Italia from an embryo with Mafia genes, according to a long-standing theory that goes back to investigations shelved in the 1990s and resuscitated by police collaborator Gaspare Spatuzza and trial witness Massimo Ciancimino. This is the “political pact” that a “stunned” Mr Gatto wanted to assess in order to “go down in history”, repeating until yesterday morning: “I am still convinced that it will be a landmark ruling”. He is countered by lawyer Nino Mormino, who calls it “the last word on negotiations between the state and the Mafia”, a comment picked up by the disappointed Caltanissetta assistant public prosecutor, Domenico Gozzo: “That’s not quite right. The negotiations never came up at this trial”. But they did come up, very significantly, in the claims made by Brancaccio Mafia boss Giuseppe Graviano, in a conversation that took place in Rome in January 1994 and was reported by Gaspare Spatuzza: “We got what we wanted. Italy is ours. This time it’s not those Socialist bastards. It’s Canale 5 and our fellow Palermitan Dell’Utri”."
