Was Columbus Catalan?
"Throughout Columbus's life, he referred to himself as Christobal Colom; his contemporaries and family also referred to him as such. It is possible that Colom is the shortened form of Columbus used for the Italian surname Colombo (which means "dove"). Colom can also be a Portuguese, French, or Catalan name.
According to Charles J. Merrill, a Doctor in medieval literature and associate professor of foreign languages, the analysis of Columbus's handwriting indicates that it is typical of someone who would be a native Catalan, and Columbus's phonetic mistakes in Castilian are "most likely" those of a Catalan, with examples such as “a todo arreo” (a tot arreu), “todo de un golpe” (tot d'un cop), “setcentas” (set-centes), “nombre” (instead of número), “al sol puesto” (el sol post).[63] Merrill states that the Genoese Cristoforo Colombo was a modest wool carder and cheese merchant with no maritime training and whose age does not match the one of Columbus.[63] Merrill's book Colom of Catalonia was published in 2008." Christopher Columbus' First Language was Catalan
There have been many theories and studies about Columbus' origins. He would come, according to these theories, from as many different countries as researchers have written about it.
Some of these studies claim that he was catalan or, at least, from the Crown of Aragon. The last one, based on the study of the writtings by Columbus, has been published by Estelle Irizarry, Professor from the Georgetown Univeristy. Based on the use by Columbus of one punctuation mark used only in catalan language, Irizarry declares that his first language would be catalan and that he would probably come from Ibiza.
This researchers demostrates too that the text that prove that Columbus was genovese would have been forged.
