Did Hitler Really Win a Democratic Election?

These last French regional elections will bring the recurrent argument, against the "infalibility" of democracy, that "Hitler won a democratic elections".

The way Hitler made his way into "winning" the elections was fairly irregular: "...in July and November 1932, the Nazis received 38% and 33% of the vote, respectively — a plurality but not enough to bring them into government. In the 1932 presidential election, Hitler lost to Hindenburg by a wide margin.

Hitler came to power not through elections, but because Hindenburg and the circle around Hindenburg ultimately decided to appoint him chancellor in January 1933. This was the result of backroom dealing and power politics, not any kind of popular vote." [LobeLog]

But in my opinion it is frequently forgotten the part played by the SA in Hitler's rise:

"The SA (Sturmabteilung or Storm Detachment) was better known as the Brownshirts or Storm Troopers. (...) From 1921 to 1933 the SA disrupted the meetings of Adolf Hitler’s political opponents as well as defended the halls where Hitler was making a speech in public." [historylearningsite.co.uk]

"Under [Ernst] Röhm SA membership, swelled from the ranks of the Great Depression’s unemployed, grew to 400,000 by 1932 and to perhaps 2,000,000—20 times the size of the regular army—by the time that Hitler came to power in 1933." [Britannica]

Imagine the power of this "parallel army" considering the importance of mass media on those times, when they were limited to newspapers and radio.

Hitler and Islam

There has been many people and historicians obsessed with uniting Adolf Hitler with Christianims, but we can find really "interesting" quotes from Hitler about Islam:

"In the Spanish people there is a mixture of Gothic, Frankish and Moorish blood. One can speak of the Spaniard as one would speak of a brave anarchist. The Arabian epoch—the Arabs look down on the Turks as they do on dogs—was the most cultured, the most intellectual and in every way best and happiest epoch in Spanish history. It was followed by the period of the persecutions with its unceasing atrocities.

Hitler sobre el Islam y el Cristianismo

Cavando las trincheras

Falta aun para que lleguen las elecciones generales, pero los dos partidos mayoritarios hace tiempo que combaten en una guerra sin cuartel desde los medios de comunicación que tienen a su servicio (obsérvese que, voluntariamente, no escribo "les apoyan", pues eso sería escesivamente metafórico).

Este es el tercer domingo que El País publica una serie sobre los principales periodistas de la nueva ultra-derecha española que lideran Intereconomía y Libertad Digital/esRadio.

El título de la serie es bastante acertado: "Los jinetes del Apocalipsis", porque ciertamente escuchando/leyendo a estos periodistas predicadores parece que el fin del mundo esta cercano.

El artículo de hoy está dedicado a César Vidal [El País], escrito por José María Izquierdo, y leerlo ayuda bastante bien a identificar los principios básicos de la intransigencia de la derecha/izquierda españolas.

Aprovecha el subtítulo para calificar al cristianismo de "secta", uno de los temas recurrentes de El País, como si ellos mismo no fueran una secta que repite sin cesar las misma ideas para que vayan cuajando en el imaginario/ideario de sus lectores.

Recuerda que César Vidal en su blog insinuó que Zapatero era masón. Tal vez lo más interesante sea ver como, se trate el tema que se trate, la ultra-derecha no puede evitar terminar hablando de lo mismo: así reflexionando sobre la presunta masonería de ZP, Vidal aprovecha para preguntarse "¿Es casualidad que los movimientos separatistas de Vascongadas y Cataluña coincidan con el deseo histórico de Francia de mantener ambas regiones como Estados colchón que debiliten a España?". Idea eminentemente conspiranoica que haría las delicias de Iker Jiménez si éste no fuese alérgico a los temas políticos, o, hablando sobre los crímenes de Stalin: "El conocimiento de los crímenes de Stalin podría dar un golpe de muerte a esa versión falaz de la guerra civil española difundida por ZP y sus paniaguados (...) No resulta extraño (...) que el PSOE, los comunistas y los nacionalistas catalanes se opongan a que la gente sepa la verdad". Si al final resultará que los catalanes también tenemos la culpa de las purgas estalinistas... Y respecto a la "memoria histórica" dice que se trata de "otra estafa, otro timo, otro tocomocho más de la izquierda y los nacionalismos destinados a vaciar los bolsillos de los sufridos ciudadanos", de nuevo los nacionalistas de por medio.

Como Iker Jiménez, Vidal muestra interés por la grafología, mediante la cual realiza un "certero" retrato de ZP: "Se suele denominar a esta te específica la 'te del brazo en alto', porque de manera muy peculiar recuerda el saludo fascista y, a la vez, es un signo de autoritarismo". Personalmente no siento simpatía alguna por ZP, pero, desde luego, su política lo deslegitima suficientemente, sin necesidad de acudir a análisis tan dudosos, justificables sólo en quien sufre una monomania persecutoria.

Pero lo más sintomático ha sido recuperar esta afirmación que César Vidal atribuye a Hitler: "Nos hemos equivocado ayudando a Franco en esta guerra. Teníamos que haber ayudado a los socialistas españoles con la esperanza de convertirlos en nacionalsocialistas. Pero ya es tarde". La única fuente rastreable de esta cita es que proviene del libro de Hugh Trevor-Roper, "The Last Days of Hitler". En este artículo del Telegraph se explica como Trevor-Roper dió por buenos unos diarios presuntamente de Hitler pero falsificados por Konrad Kujau, un corredor de arte de poca monta, según se le califica en el artículo.
